Programme aims to:

  • develop musicians’ instrument and performance skills, to a level commensurate with those found at the forefront of the industry;
  • provide musicians of proven ability with a systematic understanding of, and pathways to, successful and entrepreneurial careers in performance, together with the independent learning ability required for continuous artistic and professional development;
  • prepare musicians for performance in various and complex musical groupings, in both competitive and collaborative contexts, while developing ability to take initiative and personal responsibility, exercise leadership and make sound judgements to work successfully in complex and unpredictable scenarios, specifically including ensemble leadership and direction;
  • enable, and provide opportunities for, musicians to use a comprehensive body of theory and research and develop a critical awareness, in order to inform their preparation, performance and evaluation of original work and to develop as self-aware, reflexive and self-critical artists and performers;
  • enable musicians to develop original repertoire and a distinctive artistic personality, informed by the above.

The programme runs over a three semester 45-week academic year and is made up of 4 taught 30 credit modules followed by a 60 credit Research/Project module taken in the Summer semester.
